Wireless technology is increasingly being used by cities across the nation in innovative and creative ways for such things as improving citizen access to government services, helping cities operate more efficiently, creating a stronger sense of community, and providing more options for wireless access to the Internet.

In recognizing the potential benefits of advanced wireless networks for Los Angeles, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and City Councilman Tony Cardenas introduced The LA WiFi Initiative, with the goal of connecting Los Angeles residents, businesses and visitors to the global community.

“LA WiFi will help us meet the technology needs of our world-class media and creative industries, give a leg up to small business, plug every neighborhood directly into the knowledge-based global economy, and make computer training programs for students an after-school reality."
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

“Providing a city-wide wireless telecommunications program is another way of bridging the gap between local government and the communities it serves.” Councilmember Tony Cardenas, Chair, Information Technology and General Services Council Committee.

The City of Los Angeles is conducting a feasibility study to explore the needs, interests, and feasibility of developing a wireless network throughout the City. As part of this study the City will:
  • Conduct stakeholder outreach and analysis with residents, businesses and internal city departments.
  • Review the experiences of other cities and factor in lessons learned.
  • Evaluate current broadband services to determine if there are gaps in the availability of affordable services.

Upon the completion of the feasibility study, a report with findings and recommendations will be forwarded to the Mayor and Council, before the end of the calendar year.
